Shoestring Travel

There are many ways of saving money when travelling on a shoestring.

Accommodation is always the biggest cost.

There are numerous accommodation chains that will give you a discount off their "Rack Rate".

Rack Rate is the industry jargon for their published price.

Some of the chains are listed under each State on this site.

Also go to the Internet Links pages and find Hotel Bookings which give you much better prices.

Join the YHA.

YHA classifies anyone as a "Youth" so even the greyest of us can get membership.

I remember when I hitch hiked through Europe in 1964 that there was an age limit, and separate dormitories for males and females etc.

Things have changed-now you can get separate ensuite rooms if sharing a 4 or more dorm is not for you. Give it a go!

Public Transport is also a great way to see places without the hassel of driving.

As mentioned in the Suggested Reading section, get a copy of "No Fixed Address" by Jackie Hartnell from your local book seller or library.

Jackie has now written the sequel "Still No Fixed Address"-inspiration for all shoestring travellers.
